Location: Sacramento, CA
Square Feet: 25,000
The two-story, 25,600 square foot Railway Express Agency (REA) Building was originally constructed in 1926 to distribute mail and freight. Due to its importance in transportation and commerce and its participation in the agricultural development of California’s farmlands, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the California Register of Historic Places. Designed in a Mediterranean Renaissance Revival with Spanish and Italian elements, this style was maintained in order to comply with the Department of Interior standards.
When REA Partners purchased the building in 2002, it was in extremely poor condition. After undergoing hazmat abatement, roof, floor and partition demolition, structural and seismic upgrades, including a new foundation system, exterior refurbishment and a new core, the building now houses a restaurant, retail and office space. Today this rehabilitated landmark serves as the gateway to the larger rail yards project in downtown Sacramento.
