A new 400 car three story underground parking structure was the first major construction deliverable for the Hospital’s Pavilions addition. The construction of the underground parking structure required the installation of an extensive soil nailed underpinning/shoring system to protect the existing hospital. The below grade parking structure located adjacent to the hospital’s front entrance was excavated to a depth of 60 feet. Nearly 100,000 cubic yards of Monterey Shale was excavated and off hauled from the construction site. The design of the parking structure, along with custom built CHOMP pattern light fixtures and the new Emergency Department entry, drew international design recognition. The parking structure also provided a new state of the art Security Office; PBX (main operator switchboard for incoming phone calls), and a new telephone switch serving the new hospital additions.
